How do I know if it's the fuel pump or the fuel filter that is broken on my 92 Jeep cherokee or something else?

I just bought the car yesterday and I drove it 30 miles and it stopped in the middle of the highway. We sprayed starting fluid in it and it started for a few seconds so I know that it has something to do with fuel not getting to the engine, but what? How do I fix it and how much will it cost?How do I know if it's the fuel pump or the fuel filter that is broken on my 92 Jeep cherokee or something else?It sound like is being cause by the fuel system as well. By spray starting flied you cut the causes down to the fuel system with it's electric system. You did step one. Step two; is to find out if you have power going back to the fuel pump. It sound like you have some help. So you will not need to make up a long jumper wire. You will need a test light. Check all the ten AMPS fuses. under the dash and in the main fuse box under the hood in the black box. One of the fuse will say fuel pump. There is also a fuel pump relay. Don't run out get parts yet. Replace any bad fuses. This leave the fuel pump relay. Jack the vehicle up and place stands under it. Go to the fuel tank. Have a friend put a long screwdriver to the tank. The other end to his ear. While he hold this position. turn on the key there should a hummer for a second coming from the tank. If not. It time to check if power is getting to the tank. You will find two sets of wires. one is the fuel send unit. The other is the pump wire. Turn on the key and fine the hot wire. this is the sending unit to the fuel gage. set these wire a side. Check the other two wires. There should be no power on them. Turn the key off. Pick one wire out of these two. Set up the test light to light up. Turn the key on. The test light should light for a second if it's the right one. If not repeat the same on the second wire. If it light up, then the fuel pump is bad. If the test light does not light up and you have test light with send unit to see if you still have a good ground. If the test fail to light up. Then it is in the wiring from the relay or the relay. In this case you replace the fuel pump relay. If you still don't get power to the pump. It is time unbolt or un-clip the main fuse and relay box so you can get under it to the wiring. Make sure you do not ground out the box. Test wiring at the relay on the under side. And look for burn wire melted together.

To check the fuel filter. Loosen the end on the engine side. Place a contain under and have a friend hold it in place. Turn the key on. A shot of fuel will come out of the filter. If not unhook the other side and try again. If no fuel comes out of thee line, then filter is okay. May as well replace it since you have it off.

There are several other areas that will cut the fuel of. Fuel pressure regulator on top on the engine. The crank sensor if it has on the crank or in the distributor housing. The last is the computer.

When fuel filters go bad you lose performance but not enough that the car will not turn on. If this has not been done, then the fuel pump can burn out, the in tank ones require cooling and the fuel is what does it.

Also with the fuel pump the filter will need to be replaced also.

Try a new filter, it that does not fix it, then the fuel pump. That is provided you have checked the fuses and relay for the pump. They go out too.

As for cost, the fuel filter is pretty cheap, and with a manual to tell you where it is, a pair of pliers most of us could do it our selves.

The fuel pump will not be cheap, because it is not easy. I am not sure about the Jeep, as some cars are designed so that the pump can be replaced with out dropping the tank. If the tank needs to be dropped it will take an easy four hours for a pro, eight or more for an amateur. if you hear a humming or a motor for a split second your fuel pump is working ,if not, check the fuse /relay before replacing .. if pump is fine then change your filter.

Hope you are not using arco gas as it will plug up your filters real fast. Read the honda small engine manual it says DO NOT use arco gas and for good reason it will plug up the carburetor.

Put a line into a clear bottle and turn the key.

If it pumps ok then it's the filter. If it doesn't then you'll need to change

the pump and the filter.

Pump could be on the side of the engine or in the gas tank.
