How do you get a stuck fuel filter off?

The car is a 1990 Camry, but I don't think it really matters. The big bolt on the outgoing part of the filter is stuck. In trying to get it off I've actually managed to bend the filter itself. Now it doesn't sit right in its bracket. I don't care if I have to break the bolt or the filter...obviously both are easily replaced. Ideas? Keep in mind, there's fuel in there, so a torch is obviously not an option. How do you get a stuck fuel filter off?Usually these are set up with a dual wrench requirement. I've done a few in Hondas and Toyotas should not be any different. They can be a real hard pain to break loose. What you need to look for is to find the place where the banjo connection and bolt go into, it is squared off to take a wrench. Get a wrench on that and hold it firmly before trying to break the banjo bolt free. It helps a lot ot have a helper hold this while you work the bolt at the top using a socket or box end wrench. Use the longest wrench you can find to do the holding, and as Sarge said, use a pry bar if it helps there. Use a breaker if you have to for the socket work. WATCH THOSE KNUCKLES!!How do you get a stuck fuel filter off?I had that problem on a Honda. Why in the world the Japanese have to over engineer everything is beyond me. A simple fuel filter in the line works great.

Anyway I got a long breaker bar and a 6 point socket and had my son hold the filter bracket with a crow bar so it would not move or bend or break off and finally I got it to break loose.

And that was not the only thing that we had trouble with. LOL

Dang them. How do you get a stuck fuel filter off?Go to a parts store and get a can of %26quot;Blaster%26quot;, then spray away. It's a good product for helping to loosen nuts and bolts that are stuck. Wait a few and try taking it off again.

You need to make sure that the vehicle is turned off, obviously, and don't have any open flame or be smoking, because you are dealing with gasoline. This is the most dangerous part about it. The filter should be under the vehicle, within the fuel line system. It isn't fun to do, by any stretch, and it may be a little rusty and need some line repair to reinstall. Good luck. How do you change a fuel filter? If you're not comfortable fixing cars and don't have the proper tools, for your own sake and people who live in the same household, please take it to a shop and leave it to a professional.

Changing fuel filter requires that you disconnect the fuel pump fuse, run the car until any pressurized left over fuel is gone, then replace the fuel filter, notice the gas-flow direction of the filter when you install it. All connections must be torqued to manufacture specifications using a torque wrench. It doesn't matter how careful you are, some gas spillage is going to happen so you'd better be prepared.

I'd suggest you go to your local library, borrow a Chilton or Haynes repair manual for your 91 camry and follows the direction.

Will gas just keep coming out until I get the new filter in? or will it just stop after a little while. I've got 3/4 of a tank left and I don't want to accidently drain the whole tank. so far I'm guessing about 2 cups worth have came out. what should i do to save gas?How much gas should come out of my fuel filter when I replace it?NO . IT WILL NOT ALL LEAK OUT....JUST WHAT IS LOADED IN THE LINES...USE A CATCH PAN AND LET IT DRAIN......JUST MAKE SURE YOU PUT THE FILTER IN WITH THE ARROW TOWARDS THE ENGINE...GOOD LUCK!How much gas should come out of my fuel filter when I replace it?Added to the previous responders... DON'T do it in the garage!

It's one thing to have your car catch fire, but if it happens inside the garage... well, you get the idea. How much gas should come out of my fuel filter when I replace it?if the fuel pump isnt on then it will prob. stop. theres quite a bit in the filter itself so thats prolly what your seeing. How much gas should come out of my fuel filter when I replace it?If it's fuel injected, you should have relieved the line pressure before removing the filter bolt.

Here's the way the pros do it. They get vacuum caps in assorted sizes and remove one end of the line and quickly cap it off. Most of the gas will be coming backwards from the fuel rail back down towards the filter. So cap that off first. Then remove the connection to the fuel tank.

    Hope that helps.

How do you change the fuel filter on 2000 Pontiac Bonneville ssei?

I need to change the fuel filter and I would like to do it myself. Is it possible or is it simple? What tools do I need? How do I change it? Thank you all for answers in advance. How do you change the fuel filter on 2000 Pontiac Bonneville ssei?one end has a coupler on it that you need a special line release tool for. the other end you need a couple wrenches for. i would say unless you're extra mechanically inclined. let somebody do it for you. its an inexpensive procedure. in fact, you'll probably spend less to have a shop do it than you would for the tools to do it yourself.

Why is the fuel filter bigger than the stock?

I have a 1998 Honda Civic DX. A few years ago, I replaced the fuel filter. When I got it from Autozone, the fuel filter was bigger than the stock (which was never replaced before). I checked with the auto store, but they said that it was the right one. Is it supposed to be bigger now (because the part could not fully screw on)? I need to replace now and wondering how I should go about finding the right size fuel filter. Why is the fuel filter bigger than the stock?Get the filter from the dealer. They will have the right size and specification. Why is the fuel filter bigger than the stock?Sounds like Auto Zone was not in the zone the day they sold you the filter, unless there was a problem with the installation. Were or did you leak fuel after putting on that filter? The fuel can and will be a different size as it is not oem. Even if you were to go to the dealer for it, they could have changed the design and or modified it somewhat. I'm sure you asked for the right size, and I'm quite sure you know your engine size. I'm saying this because the pressure on the fuel system when you turned the ignition on would have blown that filter off had it not been the right one or not I'm just playing devil's advocate. So if you feel Auto Zone could have erred, than look at all the after market fuel filters and compare them,90% of them will look somewhat different, but do what's intended. If you want to go the dealer route than by all means, if it makes you more comfortable.

How do i do this?In a fuel injected vehicles the fuel pump is in the gas tank. Even when the vehicle is shut off and the battery is disconnected, there will still be fuel under pressure in the lines , from the gas tank to all the way to the fuel rail and injectors. If you buy a repair manual it will tell you how to depressurize the fuel system (so gas doesn't spray every where when you remove the fitting on your filter!!!). A lot of times the procedure involves cycling one of your injectors a few times to relieve the pressure. Just get a Chiltons or Haynes manual, it will describe exactly how it's done.

Most common problem with new bikes is a clogged jet in the carburetor.

Bikes are run at the factory and fluids are drained before shipping.

The carburetors never get fully drained.

What little gas that's left in the carb goes bad and clogs the jets, if not fully drained before the customer takes possession.

Bring it back to where you bought it and have them get the bike running properly - it's their responsibility to sell working products.

Or dis-assemble the carburetor yourself, remove and clean the jets - hold them up to the light - you should be able to see through it.How do I change the fuel filter on my Scooter?Take it back to the dealer and have them fix it....If your not a motorcycle mechanic, you can cause more damage, so just let them fix it.

i think they are called oil filter removers i know it isn't a fuel filter but i think it is the same thing to be honestWhat kind of tool is used to remove a fuel filter?I don't think that there is any special tool to remove a fuel filter, but I bet if there is it isn't an oil filter tool! If it is above the fuel tank, you may have to drop the fuel tank to get to it. I've never seen a fuel filter that needed any special tool to remove it.What kind of tool is used to remove a fuel filter?First... If you change the filter, make sure the key is off. You will have fuel leaking, the fuel lines are under 60psi of pressure.

Secound... Raising the vehicle will make life much easier, if you do it on the ground you will get soaked in fuel.

Third... One side of the filter should be threaded and the other a quick clip. The threaded side should be a 3/4 wrench and a 5/8 wrench. Their is a special tool for the quick clip, but you can manage with a pair of needle nose plyers.

Have fun and dont smoke while doing this! What kind of tool is used to remove a fuel filter? You do not really need any special tool ,if you are familiar with how it works you can get it off with a small screwdriver or some needlenose pliars. How to tell if your fuel filter was clogged?

I changed the fuel filter on my 01 Pontiac Grand Am and dirty fuel came out the inlet side of the filter and clean fuel came out the outlet side. Is this common of a clogged fuel filter? How to tell if your fuel filter was clogged?A clogged fuel filter would not provide the proper fuel pressure and fuel volume per unit time even though the fuel pump was functioning properly. Dirt in itself does not mean any filter is bad, including air filters, fuel filters, oil filters etc. In fact, when a filter starts %26quot;loading up%26quot; with particulates (dirt etc), it actually filters better than when it's brand new as long as the minimum pressure and volume are maintained. You can often get 80,000 miles use out of a fuel filter and it will still be providing the pressure and volume required. However, if you run your tank dry, water and sediment from the bottom of the tank can be pumped up into the filter, so it's recommended that you change the filter if you run out of fuel. How to tell if your fuel filter was clogged?if the filter is out side the fule tank then just take the filter loos and check the presser from the fule pump if you changed it and you thing the new one is pluged make shure you put it on the right way thare shood be a flow arrow on the filter hope this helpedHow to tell if your fuel filter was clogged?very common .you could blow threw it and then blow threw the new one and compare ,or you could cut the old filter up and see how dirty it was.How to tell if your fuel filter was clogged?yes, you'll see that every time :)

    Sorry no experience with those.

But as it can't be more difficult than any other automobile, if you want to do it without getting any kind of manual specific for your vehicle - which I suggest so it can show you where the location is - then you would have to just get under it and trace the fuel lines from the fuel tank until where the filter is.

There may be one incorporated inside the tank or more commonly is inline with the fuel line under the vehicle.

Yet another may be in the engine compartment near the fire wall before the fuel line connects to the fuel rail.

Easiest way to learn for your vehicle is to get a manual for that van.

    1. Depressurize the system.

    2. Remove old filter (have rags and drip pan available to contain the mess).

    3. Install the new filter.

    4. Pressurize the system

    5. Run the vehicle for a few minutes.

    6. Check for leaks.

Some of the sites below may help you too.

  • How often should a fuel filter actually be replaced?

I'm not really sure if a fuel filter is something you routinely replace, or only when you have problems. I have a '93 accord, I've put about 50K miles on it and never changed it, who knows when it was replaced last.

I was also wondering, is there a way to check, and or clean it to figure if it actually needs replacing?

The only reason I even wonder is because I seem to be getting an intermittent fuel delivery problem, it happens so infrequently that its hard to diagnose, but once it stalled, every once in a while it wants to crank about 15 times before starting, and sometimes (maybe once or twice a week, usually the same day), I'd be driving and the engine would suddenly cut out real quick, just enough to give a good jerk.

So I figure the fuel filter might have something to do with it. Either that or the pump every once in a while acts up. I'm pretty sure its not an ignition problem. How often should a fuel filter actually be replaced? Some how I doubt that the fuel filter is causing that. But they are cheap enough, I think. Just change it and see what happens. If the fuel filter were clogged enough to starve the engine why would it ever start again? If it were restricted enough where the engine used just a little more than could pass through, then it would stop frequently. If you are convinced that it is fuel starvation, then I would guess there is debris in your fuel tank. I think the fuel pump and filter are located back there anyway. I think I would run the tank down to a couple gallons and pull the pump and filter. Be sure to have a container large enough to catch the amount of fuel in the tank. Flush the tank with fresh gasoline and if you find no debris, then put it all back together again. If you do find debris, then clean it all up and put it back together again. How often should a fuel filter actually be replaced?on average the fuel filter should be replaced every 30K. if you take the old filter off you can check it put a paper towell or rag over the end where the gas goes into the filter and blow through it you should be able to blow through it very easily without any resistance if you have to blow hard definatly replace it either way if you don't know when filter was last changed and you have 50K on vehicle I would change the filter. hope this helpedHow often should a fuel filter actually be replaced? It is good to change ur filter every time u do a tune up on ur car. but if ur car seems like it is getting gas the right way it wont hurt to not change it. There is no way to see if ur filter is clean or not with out changing it. I thank u r right on ur cars cutting out. it most likly is ur filter. I had a car do the same thingHow often should a fuel filter actually be replaced? On your Honda, I suspect it's a fuel problem, not an electrical problem.

However, you should always do the simplest, least expensive thing first.

    1. Check to see if you have cap and rotor; if so, check the cap electrodes to see if there has been wear by the rotor that spins in a circle and touches each electrode to produce a spark. If you see any wear in the electrode(s), such as a gash in the middle of them, this means that your cap is shot and you need to get a new cap and rotor. Whenever you replace the cap and rotor you should also replace the plugs and fuel filter as well. If this makes a big difference in how it runs, then all you needed was a tune up. However, if this doesn't do the trick, then on to the next difficult, next costly thing to do.

    2. If you do not have cap and rotor, but have electronic fuel system, you need to make sure that your fuel injectors are not dirty. Some additives at your local auto store do not work, so be sure to purchase a product that is fairly expensive. Put the required amount in your gas tank and run a tank through. If this does not clear up the problem, then I suspect one or more oxygen sensors are plugged and are not telling the computer the correct ratio of gasoline to oxygen to give the injectors. Your symptoms sound again like fuel problems, not electrical problems. If you replace the oxygen sensors, the plugs, the cap and rotor and put injector cleaner in it and still have the same problem, you may be looking at a more expensive and time consuming problem: injectors need to be professionally cleaned and/or replaced; or your fuel relay or fuel pump need to be professionally looked at.

    3. You need to have a technician check and clean your fuel injectors;

    4. Have a technician replace your fuel relay. However, I have never replaced a fuel relay on a Honda, ever. Yours may be the first.

    5. Finally, have a technician check the fuel pump; if it starts at all, it's probably not the fuel pump. If the fuel relay is shorting out, it will reset itself after a few cranks and the car will start again. If it stalls in traffic, it is probably the relay. When you crank it after it stalls, do you smell fresh gasoline? If so, it is probably your fuel injectors and/or oxygen sensor(s).

Good luck to you. If you have a good Haynes manual, you can do most of this work yourself.

    4. If it is not your cap and rotor, not your fuel relay and not your fuel pump, then

I believe that your cap and rotor are bad and need to be replaced, along with your spark plugs and e. TheHow often should a fuel filter actually be replaced?I checked my trusty Honda manual and lo and behold, no change interval was listed for the fuel filter. If clean gas is always used they might last forever, however, I doubt it. A new filter at O'Reilly Auto Parts runs $12.99 to $17.99. That is a small investment compared to worrying what is causing the problem. Change the filter. It may not help your problem. but it certainly can;t hurt anything with your mileage.
