How do you know wheather you need to replace your fuel filter or wheather you need to replace fuel pump?

Yesterday oour 1997 subaru forester conked out like as if there was no gas going thru yet there is gas in the tank, how do you know wheather it is the filteror the pump that needs replacing?How do you know wheather you need to replace your fuel filter or wheather you need to replace fuel pump?find out where the filter is 1st.

if fuel filter is in the line replace it.

When you turn the car on you should be able to hear fuel pump run then shut off.

have mechanic test fuel pressure at engine then you would know.How do you know wheather you need to replace your fuel filter or wheather you need to replace fuel pump?turn the key on and listen for the fuel pump to kick in and if you don't hear it running for a couple of seconds the pump isn't working, check fuse to it to make sure it isn't burnt out and some vehicles have a reset switch on them for the pump, I don't know if yours has a switch or not, if you hear the pump running when you turn the key on I would then change the fuel filter to see if that is the problem.How do you know wheather you need to replace your fuel filter or wheather you need to replace fuel pump?

if it wont start at all it's the fuel pump

if it rides like crap then it's the fuel filter

replace the filter first then the fuel pump

if it's an in line filter will be easy and cheap to change (walmart/auto zone, advanced auto)

if has an electric fuel pump then it will probably be in the tank
