How come I can't get the new fuel filter on?

Hi all,

I went to put a new fuel filter on my 1992 civic. I got the old one off, and the flared fitting was kind of hard to pull off. I bought a purolator filter, and I can't get the flared fitting to go all the way back in.. It goes in some, and no matter how hard I push it, it won't go in... Is there a trick to this I'm unaware of.
